Terpenes 101: Understanding Cannabis Aromas, Flavors, and Effects

June 17, 20253 min read

Terpenes are naturally occurring organic compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. They are responsible for the aroma, flavor, and unique characteristics of different cannabis strains. In cannabis, terpenes are produced in the same glands as cannabinoids like THC and CBD.

Beyond smell and taste, terpenes may also influence how cannabis affects the body and mind. They interact with cannabinoids in what’s known as the entourage effect, where compounds work together to enhance or modify overall effects. Educational topics like this are part of what we regularly share throughout our blog to help consumers better understand cannabis.

Learning how terpenes influence aroma, flavor, and experience can make choosing cannabis products feel more intuitive. Understanding how these compounds show up across different formats and strains is something we break down further in our Product Guide.

Myrcene

Aroma: Earthy, musky, clove-like

Myrcene is one of the most abundant terpenes in cannabis. It’s often associated with deeply relaxing effects and is commonly found in strains labeled as Indica-leaning. Some believe myrcene may contribute to calming, sedative sensations and potential pain relief.

Outside of cannabis, myrcene is also found in hops and is partly responsible for the relaxing effects some people feel after drinking beer.

Limonene

Aroma: Bright, citrusy

Limonene is found in citrus fruits like lemons and oranges and brings a fresh, uplifting scent to cannabis. It’s commonly associated with mood elevation and stress relief. Some research suggests limonene may also support anti-inflammatory properties and help the body absorb other cannabinoids and terpenes more efficiently.

Pinene

Aroma: Pine, fresh, woodsy

Pinene exists in two forms: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, both of which are found in cannabis.

  • Alpha-pinene may support alertness and has been associated with anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator (airway-opening) properties.

  • Beta-pinene offers a more herbal, woody aroma and may share similar anti-inflammatory effects.

Pinene is also found in pine needles, rosemary, and basil.

Linalool

Aroma: Floral, lavender, slightly spicy

Linalool is best known for its presence in lavender and is often linked to calming and relaxing effects. In cannabis, linalool may contribute to stress reduction, relaxation, and anxiety relief, making it popular in strains used for winding down or evening use.

Caryophyllene

Aroma: Spicy, peppery

Caryophyllene is unique because it interacts directly with the body’s CB2 cannabinoid receptors, despite being a terpene rather than a cannabinoid. This interaction is why it’s often associated with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

It’s also found in black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon.

Humulene

Aroma: Earthy, woody, herbal

Humulene is commonly found in hops, coriander, and cloves. In cannabis, it’s often associated with potential anti-inflammatory effects and may help support appetite control, unlike some terpenes that stimulate hunger.

Terpinolene

Aroma: Floral, citrus, herbal

Terpinolene has a complex aroma and is usually found in smaller amounts compared to other terpenes. It’s often associated with mild sedative effects, along with potential antioxidant properties. Despite its calming reputation, it can also appear in strains that feel uplifting or creative.

Why Terpenes Matter

Terpenes play a major role in shaping the overall experience of a cannabis strain. The type, combination, and concentration of terpenes can influence how a strain feels, smells, and tastes—sometimes as much as THC or CBD levels. Many common questions about cannabis compounds, effects, and terminology are also answered in our FAQ.

Understanding terpenes can help consumers make more informed choices and better match products to their preferences, whether they’re looking for relaxation, focus, creativity, or balance.
